Why Hepatitis C Treatment Matters in Addiction Recovery
Hepatitis C is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can lead to serious long-term damage including cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer if left untreated. Among people with a history of injection drug use, hepatitis C rates are significantly elevated. Many individuals entering addiction treatment carry the virus without knowing it because hepatitis C often produces no symptoms for years or even decades.
This is why screening and treatment for hepatitis C is a critical part of comprehensive addiction care. Addressing the infection while patients are already engaged in recovery allows two serious health conditions to be treated simultaneously rather than leaving one unmanaged. At Restoration Recovery, hepatitis C treatment is available on-site for patients enrolled in our medication-assisted treatment (MAT) or intensive outpatient program (IOP).
What Integrated Treatment Means
Integrated treatment means you receive hepatitis C care at the same clinic, from the same care team that manages your addiction recovery. There is no need to coordinate between multiple specialists, travel to a separate facility, or navigate a different healthcare system.
Your provider already knows your medical history, your current medications, and your recovery plan. Adding hepatitis C treatment to your existing care is straightforward. Lab work, prescriptions, and follow-up monitoring all happen at the same location where you already receive services. This removes the barriers that often prevent people from completing hepatitis C treatment when it is managed separately from their other care.
How Hepatitis C Is Treated
Hepatitis C is treated with a class of medications called direct-acting antivirals, commonly referred to as DAAs. These are oral medications taken once daily for a course of 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the specific drug regimen and the patient's clinical profile.
DAAs work by targeting the hepatitis C virus directly and blocking its ability to replicate. Unlike older interferon-based treatments that were difficult to tolerate and had modest success rates, modern DAAs cure hepatitis C in more than 95 percent of patients. A cure means the virus is completely eliminated from the body. Hepatitis C is not a condition that requires lifelong management. With the right treatment, it is resolved permanently.
Most patients tolerate DAAs well. Side effects, when they occur, are generally mild and may include fatigue, headache, or nausea. Serious adverse effects are uncommon. Your provider will monitor your progress throughout the treatment course to ensure the medication is working as expected and to address any concerns that arise.
Who Qualifies for Hepatitis C Treatment
Hepatitis C treatment at Restoration Recovery is available to patients who are currently enrolled in one of our treatment programs. This includes patients receiving MAT for opioid use disorder as well as those participating in our intensive outpatient program.
Hepatitis C treatment is not offered as a standalone service. It is an integrated component of the broader care we provide to patients who are already working with our clinical team. If you are not yet enrolled in a program at Restoration Recovery, the first step is to schedule an evaluation for one of our addiction treatment services.
The Screening Process
Screening for hepatitis C begins with a simple blood test. An initial antibody test determines whether you have ever been exposed to the hepatitis C virus. If the antibody test is positive, a confirmatory test called an RNA or viral load test is performed to determine whether the virus is currently active in your body.
Both tests can be completed on-site at any of our four clinic locations. Results are typically available within a few days. If the confirmatory test shows an active infection, your provider will discuss treatment options with you and can initiate a DAA prescription as part of your existing care plan.
Screening is recommended for all patients with a history of injection drug use, shared drug equipment, or other risk factors. If you are unsure whether you should be screened, ask your provider at your next appointment. There is no additional cost for the screening itself for enrolled patients.
What to Expect During Treatment
Once your provider prescribes a DAA regimen, the treatment process is straightforward. You will take one oral medication daily for the prescribed duration, typically 8 to 12 weeks. There are no injections involved in the treatment itself.
During the treatment course, your provider will order periodic blood tests to monitor your viral load. These tests confirm that the medication is suppressing the virus and track your progress toward a sustained virologic response, which is the clinical term for a confirmed cure. A final viral load test is performed 12 weeks after completing the medication to verify that the virus has been fully eliminated.
You will continue your regular addiction treatment appointments throughout the hepatitis C treatment course. For most patients, adding DAA therapy requires minimal changes to their existing schedule. The medication is taken at home and does not require clinic visits beyond your already scheduled appointments and lab draws.
Why Treating Hepatitis C During Recovery Makes Sense
Patients who are actively engaged in addiction treatment are in an ideal position to complete hepatitis C treatment successfully. There are several reasons for this.
- Consistent clinical contact. Patients in MAT or IOP are already attending regular appointments with their care team. This built-in structure supports medication adherence and allows providers to monitor treatment progress without adding significant burden.
- Stability. Patients who are established in treatment have achieved a degree of medical and personal stability that supports taking on additional health goals. They are housed, managing daily responsibilities, and connected to care.
- Existing trust with providers. The relationship between patient and provider is already established. Patients are more likely to ask questions, report side effects, and follow through with the full treatment course when they are working with a team they already know.
- Preventing reinfection. Patients in active recovery are reducing or eliminating the behaviors that put them at risk for hepatitis C in the first place. Treating the infection during this period maximizes the likelihood of a lasting cure.
Delaying hepatitis C treatment until after addiction recovery is complete is unnecessary and potentially harmful. The liver damage caused by hepatitis C progresses over time, and there is no medical reason to wait when effective, well-tolerated treatment is available now.
Insurance Coverage
Most insurance plans cover hepatitis C screening and treatment, including the cost of DAA medications. This includes TennCare, Medicaid, and the majority of commercial insurance providers accepted at Restoration Recovery.
DAA medications can be expensive without insurance, but coverage has expanded significantly in recent years as payers have recognized the long-term cost savings of curing hepatitis C versus managing the complications of untreated infection. Our patient services team will verify your benefits and help you understand your coverage before treatment begins. For more information about accepted plans, visit our insurance page.
